It’s common for a Super Bowl winning team to suffer from the so-called “championship hangover”, in which after winning the Vince Lombardi the team intends to repeat, but a bad next season prevents them from doing so.

Whether due to the loss of players in the offseason, injuries to key players or simply a bad playing, it is very difficult for a team to repeat from one year to the next. What is less usual is for the Super Bowl champion to have a very bad season the following year, but that is just what is happening with the Los Angeles Rams.

Offense can’t find answers

The Rams are having a very bad season. At 3-6, they are in last place in the NFC West with three losses in a row and have only been able to beat teams like Arizona, Atlanta and Carolina. After the post-Super Bowl loss of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. the aerial weight of the Rams offense fell to Cooper Kupp.

Kupp was the MVP in the Super Bowl win over the Bengals in February, but even with him they haven’t had answers for an offense that averages 16.4 points per game.

If the outlook for the Rams this season was already desperate, everything seems to indicate that the defending champions have been put the final nail in the coffin for the 2022 season.

Without Kupp, the outlook looks bleak

In the most recent game, against Arizona, the Rams were without their starting QB, Matthew Stafford. But worse, Kupp was injured and is on IR. Although there is talk of 4 to 6 weeks of absence, we will have to see how his ankle injury, which requires surgery, evolves.

Against Cardinals, Kupp had one of his worst games as a pro, catching only 3 passes for -1 yards, with the longest being 2 yards. Without him on the field, Rams’ offensive production will drop even more, so Kupp’s absence is virtually the final nail in the coffin of the champion.
