Cristiano Ronaldo will retire from international football without having won a World Cup.

One of the greatest players in the history of football could not help Portugal overcome an incredible Morocco in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals.

Youssef En-Nesyri netted before the break to lead Morocco to the semi-finals. Ronaldo came off the bench in the second half but couldn’t contribute to Portugal’s efforts to turn the game around.

After the final whistle was blown, Ronaldo headed into the tunnel alone. On his way to the dressing room he burst into tears while the cameras followed him.

Fernando Santos decided to drop him to the bench for the second game in a row, but Portugal struggled in the final third before the break.

Ronaldo was brought on to replace Ruben Neves in the 51st minute, but he didn’t manage to become Portugal’s hero.

He came close to netting an equalizer late in the game, but Bono produced a solid save to deny the former Real Madrid forward.

Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo tried to no avail until they fell into despair.
