So far, it has not been Cristiano Ronaldo‘s season, with his performances against Cypriot side Omonia in the Europa League and Spain in the Nations League further highlighting his slump and discontent.

One of the main reasons for his drop in form is the fact that the once untouchable forward is now a substitute in Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United team.

Ronaldo’s incredible nutmeg in training

The relationship between the Dutch coach, who joined Manchester United this summer, and the Portuguese star is not the best.

That’s according to The Times journalist Duncan Castles, who is close to Ronaldo‘s agent Jorge Mendes.

In a story published this Saturday by the British publication, he has claimed that Ronaldo is “at odds” with his coach.

“There are those who describe a Ronaldo often at loggerheads with the latest coach of his long, and until now, relentlessly successful career,” the report stated.

“They speak of a footballer who complains about the nature and quality of training sessions, and who thinks United would be better off playing a different way.”

Why doesn’t Cristiano Ronaldo like Ten Hag’s coaching?

Ronaldo‘s complaints are focused on Ten Hag‘s style of play, rather than his role as a substitute, according to the Times article.

Castles adds that the former Real Madrid player does not like his coach’s attitude either.

Ronaldo is said to consider Ten Hag stubborn and unnecessarily wedded to an approach that worked impressively well at Ajax, yet has delivered catastrophic defeats to Brentford and City in his first 10 United matches,” the report continued.

“Dig a little deeper into Ten Hag‘s comments and the fault lines surface.”

Cristiano Ronaldo vs Ten Hag started in summer

The Ronaldo story is part of a bigger issue between the player and club, with the Portuguese seeking an exit during this past summer transfer window.

A move failed to materialise due in part to a tug of war between the club, the player and his agent, which saw the striker join pre-season training later than was expected.

That, of course, wasn’t ideal in a year with a new coach taking charge and the relationship has never gotten onto the right track.
