The father of boxer David Benavidez has said that his son is more popular now, after Canelo Alvarez‘s fans deserted him.

Canelo lost a fight against Dmitry Bivol on May 7 and it was not the expected result at all. Many thought that ,whilst Bivol‘s talent is undoubted, Canelo would have far too much for the Russian.

That did not prove to be the case and now Canelo‘s career is really under the spotlight. He is fighting Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17 and has a rematch with Bivol in May 2023. If he loses either fight, Benavidez will be the new star in the 168-lb division by default.

That could happen sooner if Canelo fights Benavidez, but it does not seem that that is going to happen.

Talking about the fight between Canelo and Bivol, Jose Benavidez Sr. explained to Fighthype that he was really excited for the contest.

“I was super excited to see that fight. I was blown away,” he said.

He went on to explain that the defeat for Canelo led to a rise in popularity for his son because a lot of Canelo‘s less loyal and dedicated fans immediately jumped ship and came to support Benavidez instead. It is a common theme in boxing, according to the father.

“When Bivol was doing really good, I thought, ‘I hope they don’t rob him, bro’ and I was super happy,” he recalled.

“To be honest with you, because of Canelo‘s loss, David is mentioned more. He gained more fans.

“A lot of people thought Canelo was the monster and that nobody could beat him. Now all of the fans that he had, they backstabbed him.

“Now they’re getting on David‘s train. To me, that’s boxing. One day they’re super with you and another day they move and go to somebody else.”
