Common sense would dictate there is no way QB Mac Jones could play on Sunday (4:25pm ET) at Lambeau Field against the Packers. The second-year quarterback sustained a severe high ankle sprain which had him leave their Week 3 loss against the Ravens. Nevertheless, Patriots coach Bill Belichick is using a phrase made popular by one of soccer’s most iconic coaches to address the subject.

“Day by day”, Bill Belichick kept repeating over and over to a reporter’s questions about New England’s starting quarterback. The future Hall of Fame coach kept fending off the reporter’s inquiries, even emphasizing and slowing down three magical words: “Day… by… day.”

Day by day: reminiscent of Atletico Madrid’s 2013-14 season

The statement immediately brought to mind the slogan Diego Simeone, aka el Cholo, made popular back in Atletico’s flagship 2013-14 season, in which he guided the underdog side to an unlikely LaLiga championship and UEFA Champions League final.

Simeone’s use of the “day by day” mantra was mostly used as a way to avoid talking about future games or objetives, although he has used it in the past to hold mentions on uncomfortabe topics. Belichick, on the other hand, used it on Wednesday to avoid giving an inch on anything related to Mac Jones’ status.

Bill Belichick: “what do I look like, a doctor?”

The Pats coach didn’t admit that Jones has a high ankle sprain, something that is even implied on the franchise’s official website. “What do I look like, a doctor? An orthopedic surgeon?”, Belichick replied.

When asked then what the New England Patriots medical staff say about Mac Jones’ injury being an ankle sprain, Belichick parroted the statement once more: “Day by day”.

“Day by day,” Belichick said for the umpteenth time. “They’ll evaluate him. What difference does it make to me? You think I’m going to read the MRI? That’s not my job”, he concluded.

For the record, New England backup Brian Hoyer spoke to media for the first time during the regular season, a clear indicator that he is in line to take over quarterback duties when the Patriots head to Wisconsin to face the Green Bay Packers.
