Frenkie de Jong‘s future at Barcelona is still up in the air, as the Catalan club still see the sale of the midfielder as an important key in solving some of their financial issues.

On the other hand, the 25-year-old is an important player for Xavi Hernandez, while he has already said on more than one occasion that his desire is to stay at Barcelona.

Ten Hag wants De Jong

De Jong is on Manchester United‘s list of transfer targets, with new boss Erik ten Hag pushing for his signing.

Ten Hag, who managed his compatriot at Ajax, has called him to try to convince him to move to Manchester United, according to TV’s ‘Onze’ programme.

But, for the moment, though, De Jong is not tempted enough, Xavi will continue to include him in his plans.

The Dutchman is reluctant to leave the club he joined in the summer of 2019 and with whom he has a contract until June 2026.

During an interview with ESPN, De Jong, who is currently in training with his national team, repeated his interest in remaining at Barcelona, although he is aware of their dire financial situation.

“I’d prefer to stay at Barcelona, I’ve said that before. Barcelona have been the club of my dreams since I was a kid,” he said.

“If other clubs call, I’ll take the call, of course, but I don’t want to talk about rumours anymore. I feel good in Barcelona. Contacts? There is no agreement or anything official.”
