Super Bowl-winning 2015 Denver Broncos‘ leading rusher Ronnie Hillman passed away on Wednesday at the age of 31 after battling a rare form of cancer.
Hillman was diagnosed with renal medullary carcinoma last August. This disease primarily affects young African Americans with sickle cell trait.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother & father, Ronnie K Hillman Jr,” his family announced on social media.
“Ronnie quietly and peacefully transitioned today in the company of his family and close friends.
“We as the family, appreciate the prayers and kind words that have already been expressed. We ask that you would give us time to process our feelings as we prepare to lay our precious RJ to rest.
“More information will be forthcoming. With love, The Family.”
Hillman’s career
After standing out with his performance for San Diego St., Hillman was selected in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Broncos, with whom he participated in two Super Bowls.
In his five NFL seasons, he recorded 494 carries for 1,976 yards, 12 touchdowns and 534 yards receiving. After leaving the Broncos, Hillman played for the Minnesota Vikings and San Diego Chargers. He joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2017 but never played a game for the NFL franchise.
