Before the season started, Derek Carr had the support of the Las Vegas Raiders management and they brought to the team his favorite receiver in high school, Davante Adams, who made history alongside Aaron Rodgers in the Green Bay Packers. Adams was supposed to be the missing piece in the scheme of the team’s new coach, Josh McDaniels.
But things went much differently than Carr thought. The Raiders dropped several games they were winning comfortably, the chemistry with Adams was slow to blossom again and, while not mathematically eliminated, at 6-9 Vegas’ season is a far cry from what it was supposed to be.
One bad game against Steelers and that was it
Last Saturday the Raiders lost a very important game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, in which Carr had a bad day with three interceptions. That was the last straw for McDaniels, who announced Wednesday that Carr was sent to the bench and the starter for the final two Raiders games will be backup Jarrett Stidham.
After that, Carr made the decision to sit out of team practice, prompting questions from reporters covering the team. As a result, it was reported that both Raiders and Carr came to the decision that he would step away from the team to “avoid obvious distractions.” With nine years as a pro, Derek Carr will not be in either practice or the final two games left in the year.
It hasn’t been the season he expected
While Carr kept the team more or less in contention for the Playoffs, his numbers over the last five games have not been good: he has thrown for 1,087 yards, 9 TDs and 9 INTs.
Carr signed a three-year, $121.5 million extension with the team, so it will have to be seen if in the offseason he remains a part of the Raiders or if they look to place him on a team in need of a veteran QB.
