Lionel Messi scored the first goal in Sunday’s World Cup final in Qatar to put Argentina ahead against reigning champions France. The spot kick was given after Ousmane Dembele was judged to have fouled Angel Di Maria.

But was the decision the right one? As Di Maria beat the Barcelona winger on the left, he drove into the box and appeared to be waiting for a foul to come from behind.

Dembele made slight contact, and Di Maria went down. The penalty was given and Messi made no mistake after sending Hugo Lloris the wrong way.

“It’s a classic case of an attacker trying to defend and conceding a penalty,” Perez Burrull told Radio MARCA.

Dembele brings Di Maria down and it’s a correct decision to give the penalty.”

Messi, in scoring, made history by becoming the first player to score in the round of 16, the quarter-final, the semi-final and the final of a World Cup.
