Novak Djokovic remains out of contention for the US Open unless there is some substantial change before the tournament starts at the end of August.
The Serbian, who has insisted on numerous occasions that he does not plan to be vaccinated against COVID, will not be able to play in the Grand Slam because the organisers of the tournament have once again insisted that they will respect the US government’s COVID protocols.
The laws of the United States oblige that all visitors looking to enter the country must be fully vaccinated, meaning that Djokovic cannot travel there as things stand.
The three-time US Open champion is listed among the entrants for the last Grand Slam of the year, but this is no more than a formal step.
The organisers of the tournament have reiterated that they have no COVID regulations of their own and, in that sense, will respect the laws of the government. This means Djokovic will play no part.
“The US Open does not have a vaccination mandate for players, and will respect the US government’s position regarding travel to the country for unvaccinated non-US citizens,” read a statement.
