The Miami Dolphins have had a busy offseason, and it all began with the firing of head coach Brian Flores, which sparked a lawsuit and accusations from Flores against his former team and others.
Former US attorney and SEC chair Mary Jo White had been leading an ongoing investigation into allegations of tampering and tanking.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins’ 2023 first-round and 2024 third-round draft picks will be forfeited for breaking the rules of the game.
Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross suspended
Additionally, owner Stephen Ross has been fined $1.5 million and suspended through October 17. Vice Chairman Bruce Beal has been fined $500,000 and is no longer permitted to attend league meetings.
The Dolphins had “impermissible communications” with quarterback Tom Brady while he was under contract with the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as well as with Don Yee, the agent for former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton prior to his announcement of retirement, according to the NFL’s announcement following the investigation.
The investigation, though, was unable to corroborate Flores’s allegations that the Dolphins intentionally tanked in 2019, their first year under his leadership. They did state that Mr. Ross “expressed his belief that the Dolphins’ position in the upcoming draft should take priority over the team’s win-loss record on a number of occasions during the 2019 season.”
