Drew Brees joined his alma mater Purdue University as an interim assistant coach for their Citrus Bowl game against LSU, but little did he know that his signing would bring an investigation into his association with a sportsbook in a business relationship, which broke gambling regulations in New Jersey, prompting all betting on the game to be halted.
This Friday, New Jersey gaming regulators ordered the halt of all betting on the college football game due to “an individual associated with the Purdue Football team”, on top of all bets placed after December 15, date that Brees was announced as an interim assistant coach, must be voided as well.
Drew Brees’ relationship with PointsBet sportsbook is what’s at the center of this violation.
Statute 5:12A-11 (f) is the one being allegedly violated, due to it stating that athletes, coaches, referees or directors of a sports governing body are prohibited from having any ownership interest in, control of, or otherwise be employed by an operator.
Brees was named a brand ambassador for PointsBet in 2021 and received equity stake in the sportsbook as part of the deal, in fact they even congratulated the former NFL quarterback on being named interim assistant coach.
