A few weeks back, Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury stated he would easily beat Oleksandr Usyk to unify all the belts because he feels the man who beat Anthony Joshua is a lighter type of Heavyweight. Today, Canelo Alvarez supports these claims by revealing his wild plans to fight the Ukrainian boxer in the near future.
According to Eddie Hearn, him and Alvarez had an surreal conversation in which he saw the Mexican star’s intentions to possibly go up to 200 lbs to fight Usyk. The condition is to make the weight at exactly 1 pound above those 200 pounds and Canelo feels confident he can beat Usyk like that.
In his particular work towards becoming the best pound-for-pound boxer in history, Alvarez recently decided to go up to Light Heavyweight and fight WBA champion Dmitry Bivol. If he wins next Saturday’s fight, Alvarez will have a true chance at possibly getting to fight Usyk under these conditions.
Egis Klimas (Usyk0s manager) already accepted publicly that his client is willing to meet those conditions in order to fight Canelo. However, he also advised Canelo to focus on beating Bivol first. But judging on how well Alvarez has done it regardless of his weight, we can definitely see him fighting Usyk soon.
Eddie Hearn reveals Canelo’s plans.
During an interview with Joe.co.uk, Hearn revealed his conversation with Canelo: “When we talk about mindset and winning, he genuinely believes he can beat Oleksandr Usyk for the world heavyweight title. He said to me ‘if you can make that fight at one pound above cruiserweight – which obviously Usyk was a cruiserweight – I will beat him’.
“I find it hard not to believe him. Sometimes, the only way someone like Canelo Alvarez or Vasyl Lomachenko gets beat is when they keep moving up in weight outside of where they should be. That’s maybe how Canelo Alvarez gets beat, (when) it’s a challenge too far.”
