LA Galaxy secured their return to the MLS playoffs with a 1-1 draw againstReal Salt Lake at the Dignity Health Sports Park, where the LA team had two penalties in their favor, however, neither of them was taken by Javier “Chicharito” Hernández.

A few weeks ago, Chicharito missed a penalty kick and days later he missed another shot from the same spot. Today, the team second-guessed and instead of giving the opportunity to Javier Hernandez, it was other players who took the penalty.

Riqui Puig missed a penalty

It was mandatory for Galaxy to score points to be one of the playoff qualifiers, and they had the victory in mind from the start and had the best opportunity to take the lead with a penalty kick. Riqui Puig was the one who took the ball, not Chicharito, but his shot was not the best and goalkeeper Zac MacMath guessed right to stop it.

Sergio Cordova from the Real Salt Lake scored first with an awkward but accurate header. Despite attempts by both clubs, the visitors went to the half-time break with the advantage and thus aspired to qualify.

LA Galaxy equalized with a penalty kick

In the second half, the LA Galaxy insisted and had an unbeatable penalty opportunity after Chicharito was brought down inside the box. Neither Chicharito nor Puig took the penalty, now it was Douglas Costa who fooled goalkeeper MacMath to equalize the match.

Riqui Puig passed to Cabral

The LA Galaxy were motivated and wanted the win to confirm their place in the playoffs. They went for the win, but the posts prevented the victory. First a shot by Riqui Puig, in the 75th minute, and in the final stretch a shot by Cabral.

Real Salt Lake tried but to no avail

Real Salt Lake tried in the final moments, but goalkeeper Jonathan Bond saved the Galaxy brilliantly. Thus, the team from Los Angeles reached 47 points in fourth place in the Western Conference and will return to the playoffs for the first time since 2019, and Real Salt Lake (44) no longer depends on itself to qualify.
