The fight between Australian George Kambosos Jr. and American Devin Haney, scheduled to take place on June 4 in Melbourne, Australia, is expected to be a close one.
Ahead of his first defense of his World Boxing Organization (WBO), World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight title, “Ferocious” confessed to feeling motivated to fight in front of his compatriots.
“It’s good to be back home. Four years I’ve been fighting on the road and being questioned by everyone. But I’ve seen the light at the end of the tunnel,” he mentioned during the virtual conference where he was able to speak openly about the opponent that fate put in front of him.
“There are only two names I asked for this moment, Lomachenko and Haney. Haney stepped forward and we will take his belt,” he asserted.
Duel of titans
For his part, Devin who is the current World Boxing Council (WBC) monarch, acknowledged being satisfied for the opportunity to appear in Australia against an opponent who is at his level.
“I think Kambosos is a great fighter, and now I’m finally facing a guy who is in his prime and coming off the most important fight of his career,” he stressed.
As if the bell had already been heard decreeing the start of the bout, Kambosos Jr launched the first challenging sentences that in a few months he will be obliged to endorse.
“Finally there will be a king of the lightweight division, and it will be me. He said he is going to be king, but what is a king for an emperor? I am an emperor, I have conquered the world,” he emphasized.
Undefeated
The truth is that the Oceanic fighter comes after surprisingly defeating Teofimo Lopez by split decision on November 27, when he reached 20 wins, 10 of them by knockout. In addition, he is still undefeated.
As for Devin Haney, he will be presented with the record of having won his last two fights against Joseph Diaz and Jorge Linares, feats that allowed him to reach 27 wins, also without defeat.
