Gervonta Davis retained the World Boxing Association lightweight world title by defeating Cuban-American Rolando Romero by technical knockout in six rounds at the Barcleys Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Gervonta was very intelligent, he did not go on the attack without thinking, he was even dominated in the first few rounds, but he waited for Romero to make a mistake and with a left hand he sent him to the canvas to continue as world champion.
Romero used the distance well, he looked physically bigger. Davis threw good combinations, he looked much faster and powerful. It was a classic study round.
The Cuban measured his enemy well with the jab, with the left hand he prepared the attack and then finished with the right. Davis could not find the distance, he did not connect his punches well. It was until the last 20 seconds that a stinging jab entered Romero’s face.
For the fourth round, Davis looked cautious, he did not attack without a plan, he had his opponent in his sights Romero looked very calm, with a well defined strategy, he did not get into much trouble.
When Gervonta found the distance he did a lot of damage, he put his left well, Romero gradually ran out of legs to get in and out. The fifth was history.
Gervonta measured his enemy, prepared the missile and connected a left that sent Romero to another planet, the Cuban got up, but he was not well, the third on the surface decided to stop the fight in the sixth round.
Erislandy Lara retained middleweight title
WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (29-3-3, 17 KOs) dominated and stopped Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan (31-5, 21 KOs). Lara, 39, dropped O’Sullivan in round four, then repeatedly rocked O’Sullivan in ensuing rounds until the bout was stopped at :23 of round eight.
