Gennady Golovkin has suggested that the loss that Canelo Alvarez suffered against Dmitry Bivol acted as a reality check for the Mexican boxer.

Canelo lost to Bivol by a unanimous decision in May and it was something of a shock for the boxing world.

Golovkin was supposed to be in Las Vegas for fight week and would be ringside for the fight, but ultimately decided not to go to Sin City.

In fact, he didn’t even watch the fight, he admitted before his third fight against Alvarez on September 17 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“I’ve seen some highlights of some fights, but I don’t follow Alvarez or think about him. He’s not on my radar,” Golovkin told BoxingScene.com.

“I know a lot of people don’t believe me, but I didn’t watch the fight live or after. I saw the highlights. There were no surprises for me. Bivol was Bivol. Canelo was Canelo. It was a good day for Bivol and it was not a good day for Alvarez.

With a smirk and a wink, Golovkin said: “Bivol is good.”

When Golovkin was asked if Alvarez’s move to 175 pounds was a good idea, and if the loss was due to competing against a much bigger fighter, the Kazakh joked about his rival’s growing love of golf.

“I refrain from commenting on whether it was a good or bad decision. There are experts who have already shared their opinion on it. For me, it didn’t really matter. He did what he wanted to do,” Golovkin said. “Participating in golf tournaments is a good idea. That’s something he should do. Jumping through weight classes, I don’t know.”
