The San Antonio Spurs are dreaming of keeping their head coach for one more year. Reports out of Texas indicate that Gregg Popovich could be back with the franchise for at least one more year.

People close to the Spurs, and to Popovich himself, say the reason he would stay on is because he loves what he does on the sidelines and because he needs to “be inside that gym.”

Spurs eliminated by Pelicans

The franchise’s season came to an end last Wednesday when the New Orleans Pelicans eliminated them in the playoffs. San Antonio was left with a record of 34 games won to 48 lost, good for 10th place in their conference.

After the loss, Popovich tied his third season without making the playoffs, after racking up the previous 22 consecutive seasons playing in elimination series.

Some fans do not share the view of many others, which is that Popovich is still at the helm of the team at 73 years of age. But those who do, appeal to the fact that his veteran years in the league can give the team titles.

But then you look at the numbers, and fans realize that this is the third year in a row that their team has failed to make the postseason.

Record number of wins as a coach in the NBA

In contrast to this season and the other three without playoffs, Gregg Popovich set a new record in NBA history. The head coach became the league’s winningest coach, passing Don Nelson.

The previous mark stood at 1,335 wins, but when the Spurs were eliminated, Popovich added almost ten more and left the record at 1,344 games won.

The rings he has in his hands also have him in the top of coaches, as he has five titles in this sport.
