It isn’t often that you see Lewis Hamilton make a mistake, but Friday’s qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix was one of those occasions.

The Mercedes driver was hit by oversteer in the middle of Turn 7, which sent him crashing into the barriers, and resulted in an apology to his team over the radio.

“I’m really sorry guys,” said a disappointed Hamilton, as Mercedes looked to be on course for a strong starting position.

Unfortunately, the orange army supporting Max Verstappen in attendance regrettably celebrated the accident, which Hamilton walked away from without injury.

The two pushed each other to the limit in last year’s championship fight, and it appears there’s still no love lost amongst the supporters and drivers, with Verstappen taking a dig at Hamilton earlier this week over their crash at Silverstone last season.

Hamilton‘s teammate George Russell also sent his Mercedes into the barriers after losing the rear of his car at Turn 10, which resulted in the second red flag of the qualifying session.
