After crashing out during the qualifying session for the Formula 1 2022 Austrian Grand Prix, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton had to endure a series of cheers from the Dutch contingent who were there to support Max Verstappen.

Hamilton, who finished eighth in Saturday’s sprint race, has blasted those fans stating that it is never a good idea to cheer when a driver hits the barriers.

“A lot of things went through my head after the accident but when I heard that… Imagine,” Hamilton stated.

“I don’t agree with it, no matter what situation it is in. A driver could have ended up in the hospital … are you going to celebrate that?

“It’s amazing that people do that knowing how dangerous our sport is.

“You should never cheer when someone has a problem or an accident. It shouldn’t have happened at Silverstone and it shouldn’t have happened here.”

Formula 1, for their part, have come put in support of Hamilton releasing a statement on social media where the organisation have said they will not tolerate such behaviour.

Verstappen, too, has hit out at the supporters who celebrated Hamilton‘s crash.
