NFL owners met in New York to discuss various issues concerning the future of the league, one of the topics on the table was the continuation of Roger Goodell as commissioner.

The owners voted 31-1 to allow their compensation committee to begin negotiations on a new contract with commissioner Roger Goodell, but not before two of the league’s most powerful owners, Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots, were involved in a heated exchange, ESPN reported.

What was said?

Reports indicated that Kraft joined the majority in strong support of the measure, with Jones as the lone dissenter in the owners-only session, and eventually told Kraft, “Don’t fuck with me.”

Kraft responded, “Excuse me?”

“Don’t fuck with me,” Jones said.

The move then passed, sources said. The NFL and a Cowboys spokesman declined to comment. No one from the Patriots provided any comment on what happened at the owners’ meeting.

Jones disagrees with Goodell remaining in the NFL.

This is not the first time Jerry Jones has been outspoken and opposed to a new contract for Goodell, the problem with the NFL commissioner is the same as in years past: the structure of Goodell’s compensation.

In 2017, Goodell signed a new five-year contract that was different from previous ones. Jones led a charge that restructured Goodell’s deal from mostly salaried to mostly performance-based bonuses. Various committees composed of owners determine whether they believe Goodell has met his goals and objectives.

Roger Goodell’s new contract would be for two to three years, ESPN reported.
