It’s official, the 53-man roster for the Chiefs did not include Josh Gordon. According to numerous reports, veteran wide receiver Gordon, who was once considered to be among the finest in the NFL, is being released today.

The Chiefs‘ wide receiver room was competitive in camp despite the Miami Dolphins’ acquisition of Tyreek Hill, with multiple players vying for the No. 5 spot behind JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and rookie Skyy Moore. Gordon was not chosen.

Since setting the NFL record for receiving yards as a 22-year-old on a terrible Cleveland team in 2013, Gordon has gone through various suspensions, trades, and cuts.

Over the past eight seasons, Gordon has only participated in 45 games, and it’s probable that this was his final NFL game.

About Josh Gordon

“Appreciate all the Chiefs kingdom has done for me and my family this past year,” Gordon wrote on Twitter. “Thanks for the opportunity and the many memories.”

Gordon, who had previously been relatively unknown, became a household name in Cleveland, where he led the NFL with 1,646 receiving yards in 2013 and was named an All-Pro. But during his golden years, suspensions for breaking the NFL’s substance usage policy kept him out of the lineup for two complete seasons.

Early in the 2018 campaign, Gordon was moved from Cleveland to New England. He was the Patriots’ leading receiver but was forced to sit out the whole postseason after declaring that he would be giving up football to concentrate on his mental health.

Gordon would be subject to an indefinite suspension, the NFL subsequently announced, for breaking the terms of his conditional reinstatement under the league’s drug policy. Despite his absence, Gordon received a Super Bowl ring from the Patriots when the team defeated the Rams in Super Bowl LIII.

In 2019, Gordon rejoined the Patriots, but after going on injured reserve early in the season, he was later released. He was signed by the Seahawks in November, and in seven games with Seattle, he caught seven passes for 139 yards.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound wide receiver will now start looking for his next chance. Despite his lack of recent success, teams looking to bolster their receiving corps at the start of the regular season will probably be interested in Gordon.
