The Houston Astros are one win away from winning the World Series for the second time in their history after defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in a highly emotional 3-2 victory in Game 5 of the 2022 World Series in a duel that represented the end of the ghosts of the “Fall Classic” for star pitcher Justin Verlander.

The Astros’ multiple heroes in Game 5

The Astros’ pitching ace got his first World Series victory after countless failed attempts by being on the mound for 5 innings in which he allowed one clean run, four hits, gave up four walks and struck out six.

Verlander left the game won in the fifth, thanks to the fact that one inning earlier, young Jeremy Peña once again made history with a solo home run, becoming the first rookie shortstop to hit a solo home run in a World Series in history.

Chas McCormick will be remembered forever

But despite the great moments of Verlander and Peña, the reality is that the true hero of Game 5 was center fielder Chas McCormick, who in the bottom of the ninth inning made a catch for history when he made a spectacular leap and hit the fence but did not drop the ball on J.T. Realmuto‘s hit, which with the speed of this catcher could have reached third base.

Another big hero of the game was Astros closer Ryan Pressley, who got a five-out save as he was put into the game by manager Dusty Baker with one out and a pair of men on base in the bottom of the eighth inning, got no hits and struck out two in his work on the mound.

What’s next for the Astros and Phillies?

Now, the Phillies will have to win two away games in order to win the World Series. Game 6 and Game 7 (if necessary) will take place at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, with the first game on Saturday, November 5.
