Katie Taylor took the victory to Ireland and retained the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO lightweight world crown by defeating Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano by split decision in a historic show at Madison Square Garden in New York, a place that had for the first time a women’s star fight,

Taylor not only retained her crown, but also her undefeated record and with this victory she is now the best fighter in the world.

There was no study round, why not, the two boxers came out to give a show, to leave their skin to win and make it clear who was the best of the two. Puerto Rico and Ireland gave us two warriors and in the ring they showed it.

Serrano could have won the fight

Amanda Serrano put Taylor in bad conditions in the fifth round, a right hand crashed into the face of the Irish, Katie’s body resented the blow and her legs almost did not respond, but her pride pulled her through and she was able to stand the arsenal of blows that the Puerto Rican threw at her.

Serrano came out to finish the job, took her rival to one of the corners of the ring, threw punches from all angles, Taylor could not take it anymore, but she had a huge heart that kept her standing. The European was throwing rights and lefts when she could, she wanted to survive and she had succeeded.

Taylor’s face had traces of the battle, her nose was deformed and bloody. Serrano took a break in round 7, although she was chasing her opponent she could not connect solid punches. The Puerto Rican had a clean face and confidence to the sky.

Taylor came out aggressively, threw everything she had, plus the mobility of her feet made her a difficult target, but Serrano’s patience, at times paid off, she aimed the punches well and connected them with precision. Taylor finished the eighth round with her mouth open with fatigue.

The two fighters came out to throw punches, Serrano pressed and then Taylor, it was a fight that gave no quarter, the two fighters left their souls in every punch, their lives were going in the ring to the applause of the audience that gathered at the Madison.

The fight went 10 rounds

The tenth and last episode arrived, Serrano raised her hands, she asked the people for noise. The Puerto Rican came out to kill or die, but in front of her was a warrior who was going to sell her defeat or buy her victory with blood. They stood in the center of the ring and left the last drop of sweat that remained in their bodies. The two went to war, threw everything they had left, entered the give and take. The bell rang amidst a wave of applause and recognition for these two gladiators.

The contest went to the decision of the judges who scored the fight: 96-94 Serrano, 97-93 Taylor and 96-93 Taylor. The Irish woman won by split decision.

“They said that women couldn’t fight and that we couldn’t fill. Look at this… I think I did win, but things are what they are. Katie is a great champion and it’s an honor to have shared the ring with her.” said Serrano
