Kyle Lowry has been one of the most reliable guards in the NBA for many years now, but he’s still had his share of critics, including those who made comments about his weight.

Lowry is an NBA champion (in 2019 with Toronto), a six-time All-Star and an Olympic gold medallist, so it’s fair to say he’s had the last laugh.

However, the 36-year-old has revealed that the personal criticisms and body-shaming used to really affect him earlier in his career.

Speaking on Vince Carter‘s podcast, the Miami Heat player opened up about people talking about his size and weight.

“It used to bother me a lot,” Lowry said on The VC Show.

“It used to get to me. It used to really get to me, I’m gonna be honest with you. And now, I don’t care.

“Yeah, yeah, thick’s been good for me. Yeah, I’m cool with it. … Y’all can create all the memes y’all want. I embrace it. I love it.”

Kyle Lowry’s successful career

Lowry was drafted with the 24th pick by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2006 NBA draft. He spent two and a half years with the Grizzlies before being traded to the Houston Rockets.

It wasn’t until he joined the Toronto Raptors, Vince Carter‘s old team, that things really took off for Lowry.

In a nine-year spell in Canada, Lowry made the post-season in seven straight years from 2014 to 2020. He was also picked for six straight All-Star games from 2015 to 2020.

Without doubt, 2019 was the pinnacle of that period from a team perspective and Lowry was instrumental in bringing the championship to Toronto.

The guard averaged 15 points, 6.6 assists and 4.9 rebounds in the post-season as the Raptors charged to the title, defeating the Golden State Warriors in the Finals.
