Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka extended his contract through the 2025-26 NBA season on Saturday, according to Yahoo Sports.
Pelinka, 52, worked under executive vice president Magic Johnson for two years before the latter quit in April 2019.
After abruptly leaving the organization, Johnson accused Pelinka of “backstabbing.”
Lakers owner Jeanie Buss promoted Pelinka to vice president of basketball operations in 2020.
Johnson and Pelinka later reconciled after the Lakers won their 17th NBA championship, but has it all been worth the trouble?
Rob Pelinka is only in LA because of Kobe Bryant
Pelinka was Kobe Bryant‘s agent throughout most of his career and the two became close friends.
Lakers hired Pelinka as their GM in 2017 despite having no prior experience in a franchise’s front office.
Johnson is credited with bringing LeBron James to the Lakers in 2018 and for plotting the Anthony Davis trade prior to leaving the team.
Pelinka, on the other hand, got rid of Alex Caruso and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to get Russell Westbrook.
The past two seasons for the Purple & Gold have been disastrous, so for Buss to extend Pelinka until 2026 means she will double down on who she trusts even if expectations are not met.
