Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka gave his players a cringey speech reminiscent of what Steve Carrell would do on “The Office” in his role as Michael Scott.
The clip aired on Spectrum Sportsnet minutes after Los Angeles dropped to 0-5 with a crushing loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday.
In the latest episode of Backstage: Lakers, Pelinka tells players that when the organization spells words, they don’t like to use the letter “i” because they are a “we” and “us” franchise.
He points at the word “Chip” — written on a t-shirt with the Larry O’Brien trophy replacing the letter “i” — while explaining that he has chip on his shoulder.
Pelinka basically gave the old “there’s no ‘i’ in ‘team'” speech to players like Lonnie Walker IV and Troy Brown Jr., who looked on with blank stares.

CJ Toledano, a comedian on Twitter, shared the clip of Pelinka giving his speech, but with the cast of characters from “The Office.”
The edit fit perfectly, as the professional NBA players had the same reaction as those who work at the fictitious Dunder Mifflin paper company.
Pelinka is clearly operating out of his depth if he’s trying to rally the team as if they were high school athletes.
Lakers owner Jeanie Buss recently extended Pelinka’s contract despite him dismantling the 2020 championship roster to bring in an aging Russell Westbrook.
