Speculation about LeBron James’ future has come to an end, the ‘King’ finally decided to remain in Los Angeles playing for the Lakers for two more seasons. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski broke the story after Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul confirmed that the ‘King’ is staying with the Lakers for two more seasons. His level of performance has remained consistent despite his tatus as one of the oldest players in the league.

Just last season, he fought for the scoring title against Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo as the only three players who averaged 30+ PPG. That was more than enough for his agency to negotiate the most impressive two-year contract in the league’s history. This set him apart from the rest of NBA stars, it should also motivate him for the upcoming season.

LeBron James’ contract extension details with the Lakers

According to Woj, the Lakers agreed to pay LeBron James a total of $97.1 million for the next two years. This makes him the best-paid player in the entire league, averaging $48.05 million secured. However, there is more to this contract than meets the eye. Get this, LeBron’s overall wages can increase to a staggering $111 million if the salary cap in 2023-2024 rises to a substantially higher number. The extension also includes a 15% trade kicker.

This is an ideal way to seal the deal on what can potentially become one of LeBron James’ final contract as an NBA star as he enters year 20 of his legendary career. This contract also includes a player option to extend his contract for one more season in 2024. A deal that makes LeBron ineligible for a no-trade deal because he secured an extension, not a new deal.

LeBron becomes the highest-earning player in NBA history

Securing this extension also puts LeBron James as the highest grossing player in NBA history with $532 million throughout his nearly 20-year career in the league. He surpasses Kevin Durant in this specific category. James still holds the hope of staying at the top of his game until sons Bronny or Bryce James make it to the NBA and gets to play with either of them as professionals.

In American sports history, there are very few examples of this happening with a certain level of success. LeBron had Ken Griffey Jr. as his example after both of them shared the MLB stage during their time as father and son with the Seattle Mariners. Can LeBron James make it that far in order to play with his sons?
