According to LeBron James, Brittney Griner has been held captive for far too long and the United States government has not done enough to bring her home; going as far to say that if he were the WNBA star, he would be hesitant to return to the country.

When the topic of the imprisoned American basketball star came up during a recent taping of “The Shop,” LeBron made these controversial statements.

“Now, how can she feel like America has her back? I would be feeling like, ‘Do I even want to go back to America?'”

It’s obvious that LeBron doesn’t think the United States is doing nearly enough to return the Phoenix Mercury star home. Griner was detained in a Russian airport close to Moscow in the middle of February after Russian authorities claimed to have discovered cannabis oil-filled vape cartridges in her bag.

Griner’s arrest was initially kept a secret from the American public, which was deliberate on the part of the United States. The United States was aware that Russia could use Griner as leverage against the West as the Russia-Ukraine conflict continued.

Full episode of “The Shop” ep. drops Friday on HBO.

Griner’s current situation

Cherelle Griner, the wife of Brittney Griner, recently spoke with Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden. To be fair to LeBron’s comments, the “The Shop” episode appears to have been shot prior to Cherelle’s conversation with the president.

Karine Jean-Pierre, the press secretary for the White House, has frequently answered inquiries from reporters about all issues relating to Griner.

The Griner family has also been in touch with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken. Like Brittney, former Baylor athlete Colin Allred has devoted countless hours to the cause of freeing Griner.

Griner recently appeared before a judge and expressed her desire to enter a plea of guilty to the drug charge after spending months imprisoned in a Russian cell. She has not yet received a verdict and could spend 10 years behind bars.
