For the longest time, Leo Messi haters have existed all around the world but it’s hard to believe people from Argentina actually hated Messi. Those who did were mostly journalists who refused to consider him better than Diego Maradona. Some even still think the late legend is better than Leo, to each their own. But Argentina Public Television journalist Sofia Martinez, wanted to remind Messi how important he became for absolutely everybody in his country after last Tuesday’s performance against Croatia. She pulled no punches with her touching tribute to Leo, who was visibly moved by what she said.

The exchange happened right after Argentina’s win over Croatia, the journalist tends to have many exchanges with Messi after games. This is what she told the captain: “I just want to tell you that no matter the results, there’s something nobody can take from you. It’s the fact that you resonated with Argentinians, every single one. There isn’t a kid who hasn’t bought your team jersey, no matter if it’s fake, real, or a made up one. Truly, you made your mark on everyone’s life. And that, to me, is beyond winning any World Cup. No one can take that from you, and this is my gratitude. For how much happiness you bring to so many people. Thank you, captain.”

Messi’s real importance in world football history

The fact that Messi will have a second chance to win the FIFA World Cup next Sunday didn’t make any difference of the importance he has for football history. Many already considered him the best ever regardless of what happened during this World Cup. However, the Argentina skipper wanted to obliterate any kind of doubt about this GOAT debate. with his performances during the knock-out stage alone, Messi killed that debate for good. The only doubts left were back in Argentina, where so many journalists and experts still considered Maradona the better player.

The entire football community was already tipping the scale in Messi’s favor over Ronaldo since the two of them were in their prime. Cristiano had his chance to catch on to Messi between 2016 and 2018 but Leo got his advantage back soon after that. What this journalist told Messi is not what people from Argentina think, it is what the entire world who has enjoyed his football would like to tell him to his face. Messi’s football made people happy for nearly two decades all around the world.
