Lionel Messi, one of the stars competing in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, continues to make history in his career with Argentina.

On Friday, Messi tied Gabriel Batistuta (10) as the country’s top scorer in the history of the World Cup tournament.

Lionel Messi scores from the penalty spot. Netherlands 2-2 Argentina

In the 73rd minute against the Netherlands, Messi scored a penalty kick to make it 2-0, seemingly giving Argentina a comfortable victory.

Argentina lost the lead in regulation, but managed to punch its ticket into the semifinals after a tense penalty shootout.

Messi is playing in the fifth World Cup of his career and possibly his last.

Messi reached 4 goals in Qatar 2022

Messi’s goal against the Netherlands was his fourth in Qatar. He also scored on Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Australia.

Messi scored just one goal in his first World Cup, South Africa 2010, four in Brazil 2014 and one more in Russia 2018.

During this World Cup run, Messi surpassed Diego Maradona and Guillermo Stabile on the all-time list.

He is now just one goal away from claiming the historic milestone for himself, pushing Batistuta to second. Argentina will take on Croatia in the semis on Tuesday.
