Although Frenkie de Jong continues to express his desire to remain at Barcelona, it looks as though a move to Manchester United may be in the cards.

The Dutchman was part of the Blaugrana’s kit launch for the 2022/23 season, but it seems he isn’t guaranteed to wear it. That’s because Barcelona are desperate to reduce their wage bill, as they can’t sign new players until they do so.

Ten Hag makes a move

De Jong’s sale would free up some much needed space for Barcelona, and Manchester United are certainly willing to help them out.

New manager Erik ten Hag helped the midfielder become a key figure during their time at Ajax, and he’s reportedly already spoken with him about a move Manchester, where he would make him a focal point in his side.

Sporting considerations

De Jong recently stated that he is more comfortable with the style of play of the Dutch national team than that of the Blaugrana, and Manchester are expected to play more like the former.

Another issue for the Dutch midfielder is Xavi‘s unwavering belief in Sergio Busquets, which means his spot in starting XI at the Camp Nou isn’t always guaranteed.

United’s offer

Between Ten Hag’s desire to sign him and a competition for places at Barcelona, all signs seem to indicate a future far from Spain. United’s reported offer is 60 million euros plus 20 million in bonuses, which is said to have been warmly received by Barcelona.

Profit for Barcelona

Barcelona know they can get a good deal for a player that originally cost them 75 million. United’s offer would allow them to rid themselves De Jong’s remaining 40 million in wages, while allowing them to make a profit of about 50 million.

That figure would help them reduce the losses from last season, though Barca are confident they can get an even bigger fee from United.
