Diego Jr, the son of the legendary Diego Maradona, has spoken after Argentina’s disappointing opening game loss to Saudi Arabia.

Amongst his comments, he had some harsh words for Lionel Messi, who he doesn’t see as being on the same level as his father.

Argentina were beaten 2-1 by Saudi Arabia on Tuesday in a disastrous start to a tournament that they are expected to be among the contenders to win. By contrast, for the Saudis, it was cause for a day of national holiday to celebrate.

Maradona Jr spoke to Radio Marte in his native Italy and discussed the devastating result for Argentina and the comparisons between Messi and his father.

“People who compare Messi and my father don’t understand football,” said Diego Jr.

“We are talking about two different planets, but I don’t want to give up on Messi just yet.”

Argentina’s devastating loss

After a tough setback, Argentina must now pick themselves up and start over, knowing they have less margin for error.

As Diego recognises, that’s football, sometimes there are upsets.

“I’m devastated by this defeat,” said Diego Jr.

“I can hardly believe all this really happened. Losing against Saudi Arabia is mental.

“They were scared. Football is like that.

“Sometimes it happens that you lose even against much weaker opponents.”

Who is Maradona’s Italian son?

Diego Armando Maradona Sinagra (Naples, 1986) is Maradona‘s Italian son, fruit of his relationship with Cristina Sinagra.

The former footballer only acknowledged his son in 2016, four years before his death, but they had a good relationship in those few years.

“I always talked to my old man, when he wanted,” Diego Jr. told MARCA in 2020.

“Of course, when he didn’t want to talk to anyone, he didn’t talk to anyone, not even me.”
