I like chaos, I get bored if I don’t take risks.” So says 71-year-old Jim McIngvale, known in the United States as ‘Mattress Mack’ for his crazy bets that bring him extraordinary winnings and colossal losses.

The Houston-based businessman, owner of Furnitury Gallery, a giant furniture store on the outskirts of the Texan city, is back in the limelight for another high-stakes challenge: in the spring he bet 10 million dollars on the MLB side Houston Astros, his favorite team, winning the World Series.

Now, with Houston already qualified for the finals (they take on the Phillies in Philadelphia on Friday 28), McIngvale stands to win 75 million dollars, the largest prize in gambling history.

McIngvale is living an eventful retirement as he mixes his passion for sports, especially baseball, his unhealthy devotion to betting and his colossal fortune (estimated at 300 million dollars).

In April he already won 10 million dollars after betting early in the season on the NCAA basketball title for the University of Kansas.

This money was good for him to recover the 10 million dollars he had lost after the SuperBowl won by the Rams over the Bengals. He can’t always get it right.

McIngvale had already bet in 2017 on the Astros when they were champions. And his 8 million dollar win made him a celebrity in Houston and a figurehead for the MLB franchise, which invited him to the team’s White House reception.
