The Mexico National Team lost last Saturday against Argentina and got themselves into a deeply concerning scenario for Wednesday’s crucial match against Saudi Arabia. Given that Qatar is a neighbouring country, the Arab fans would be a massive crowd attending the game against Mexico. One could say they were locals, this was confirmed when Mexican players were announced on the big screens and Arab fans booed all of them. Result combinations between both groups were hard to call before the games took place. If Mexico won by four, they depended on nobody to advance.

During the first half. Mexico kept the ball and made some important attempts but goalkeeper Alowais had a great first half. All four teams were watching over the other game inside the same group, Argentina was also drawing agianst Poland with no goals but those deadlocks were bound to break. Argentina and Mexico were dominating their respective games, but ‘Tata’ Martino’s team would defy all odds and make their best effort to go through to the Round of 16. We had a second half filled with excitement from the Mexican National Team ahead of us.

Henry and Chavez put Mexico back in the game

After the break, Argentina scored a goal against Poland through McAllister while Henry Martin scored one against Saudi Arabia almost simutaneously. It happened early in the game during a set piece where Martin scored inside the box with a precise left-footed shot. But the best was saved for a few minutes later, midfielder Luis Chavez scored the second free-kick goal of the entire World Cup. The Tijuana Xolos-made player scored a belter from a long distance, straight into the top corner. With two goals, Mexico was suddenly trusting they could actually make it to the Round of 16. Argentina scored a second goal that tied everything against Poland, everything but fair play.

On paper, Mexico’s 7 yellow cards placed them just shy off the Round of 16 against Poland’s 4 yellow cards. But the way Mexico and Argentina were playing their games, this hardly seemed like it would end with a 2-0 victory for each. Poland got booked with 15 minutes left on the clock, which left yellow cards at 7-5 in Poland’s favor. Only a goal from Mexico would change El Tri’s destiny.

Argentina had one chance with four minutes left on the clock but Poland‘s defense blocked Tagliafico‘s shot, this left Mexico depending on just another goal. Lozano had a free-kick during the final minutes but goalie Alowais saved the potent shot. During the very final minutes, Salem Al Dawsari scored a beautiful one-two goal that broke the hearts of 300+ million Mexicans who hoped for more than 90 minutes. In hidsight, Mexico did not qualify because of Messi’s missed penalty against Poland during the first half. El Tri bids farewell to a World Cup where they only played well for one game.
