The tragic shooting this Monday, July 4th in Highland Park, just outside the city of Chicago, has overshadowed what is usually a day of celebration for Independence Day in the United States and the world of sports, especially the MLB is no exception and the Chicago White Sox have already announced changes to the plans they had in their game this day.

Game vs. the Twins will not be suspended

The White Sox decided not to suspend the game they had scheduled against the Minnesota Twins this Monday, however, after the nine innings, they intended to celebrate Independence Day with a fireworks show, which has been suspended in respect to the victims of this unfortunate shooting.

“Our hearts are with the Highland Park community. The entire Chicago White Sox organization expresses our deepest sympathies to the families and Friends of the innocent victims of today’s horrific shooting and off of those who have been affected by this tragedy,” the White Sox said in a statement. “After consulting with Major League Baseball, tonight’s scheduled games against Minnesota will take place at 7:10 pm. However, the postgame Fireworks celebration is canceled. A moment of silence will be held before the start of tonight’s game.”

Fireworks show, a tradition to celebrate Independence Day

The fireworks show is traditional to celebrate Independence Day in the United States and the suspension of the show speaks to the seriousness of the incident in Highland Park, which is located about 25 miles north of the city of Chicago.

The shooting at Highland Park left at least 6 dead and more than two dozen injured during the 4th of July celebration parade.

The White Sox (38-39) currently sit 4.5 games behind the Twins (45-37) for the lead in the American League Central Division.
