The significant head and neck trauma suffered by Tua Tagovailoa in Week 4 had viewers all over the country clutching their chests. The chilling injury after what seemed like a routine sack caught everyone off-guard. But then dots started being connected from the events of Week 3 and those of Thursday Night Football, when he was allowed to return to the field and avoid the NFL’s concussion protocol.
Against the Bengals, Tua’s arms and fingers contracting while he was unconscious were clear signs of decorticate posturing, a condition that occurs when someone sustains significant head trauma.
The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) wants to find out why he was cleared to return in the Week 3 game against the Bills, and avoid the NFL’s concussion protocol altogether.
In a tweet, the NFLPA made the following statement: “Player health and safety is at the core of the union’s mission. Our concern tonight is for Tua and we hope for a full and speedy recovery. Our investigation into the potential protocol violation is ongoing”.
Nowinski threatens murder charges against the Dolphins
Neuroscientist Chris Nowinski, Ph.D, went on a fiery tirade on social media and hit at what he called total “incompetence by the entire Dolphins organization”.
Nowinski, who first gained fame as Chris Harvard, a wrestling persona in the WWE, went a step further and threatened to push for criminal charges against the NFL franchise: “You guys should go to jail for letting him play 5 days after an obvious concussion you covered up. If he dies from second-impact syndrome, I’m pushing form murder charges”.
Nowinski, who is a neuroscientist with a doctorate and founded the Concussion Legacy Foundation, was already appalled that Tua Tagovailoa was allowed to suit up for the game in Cincinnati. His prediction before the game was eerily accurate in many ways: “If Tua takes the field tonight, it’s a massive step back for concussion care in the NFL.
“If he (Tua) has a second concussion that destroys his season or career, everyone involved will be sued & should lose their jobs, coaches included. We all saw it, even they must know this isn’t right”, Chris Nowinski wrote hours before the game started. The wrestler turned neuroscientist afterwards said that he “hated to be right”.
