In probably the most random and scary news of the day, NFL legend Drew Brees appears filming a promotional video for a betting site called PointsBet Sportsbook and gets struck by lightning. In the footage, there is a full camera crew getting ready to film what seems to be a promo under a dangerous thunder storm environment. Heavy lightning sppears in the background at Lake Zuila in the city of Maracaibo, Venezuela. Crew members are getting Brees ready for a shot and move away from the frame.
As soon as the crew moves back, lightning appears to hit exactly where the former New Orleans Saints QB is standing. The video is abruptly cut right after that happens and it started going viral on social media very quickly. All news outlets started scrambling to see what happened, see if Drew Brees is okay. Lightning hitting anyone like that would kill a person, but all signs point at Drew being completely unharmed. As it turns out, the video is not what people think despite looking extremely real.
Did Drew Brees actually get struck by lightning?
The PointsBet Sportsbook Twitter account even released a message where they express concern over what happened to Drew Brees while they were filming this promo. This is what they wrote: “We are aware of the media coverage regarding PointsBet brand ambassador Drew Brees. We are in communication with Brees’ team and will continue to monitor events throughout the coming hours. At this stage we will not be making any further comment.”
But as we all searched for the evidence of what happened and concern grew over the former QB, it turns out he is completely okay. PointsBet Sportsbook decided to do a mockumentary-styled publicity stunt to promote their Lightning Bets modality. A subsequent video shows Drew Brees inside an ambulance promoting these free lightning bets and gets struck by lightning a second time after stepping out of the vehicle. Puns are often lame but what do you think about this one? Is this great publicity or not?
