Novak Djokovic has confirmed that he will not compete in the US Open as a result of the country’s harsh entry rules which forbid foreign nationals without two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to enter.
Both Djokovic and his coaching staff, led by Goran Ivanisevic, spoke of their pessimism at the end of Wimbledon about the Serb’s participation at the US Open, and now it has been confirmed.
The CDC has not made any changes to its entry protocols, which require foreigners to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, while the rules are different for Americans, who can fly home without vaccination.
Djokovic has stuck to his principles despite the harsh media criticism and coercion tactics of the health authorities in Australia and now the US.
“Sadly, I will not be able to travel to NY this time for US Open. Thank you #NoleFam for your messages of love and support,” he tweeted.
“Good luck to my fellow players! I’ll keep in good shape and positive spirit and wait for an opportunity to compete again. See you soon tennis world!”
Return at Davis Cup
The Serbian tennis player will return to official competition on September 14 in the Davis Cup group stage in Valencia. Serbia make their debut against Spain, which means that Djokovic will face Carlos Alcaraz in the number one duel.
