Corey Phelan, a left-handed pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies minor league team, died after being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system and occurs when the body produces too many abnormal lymphocytes.

The young left-handed pitcher, born in New York, was signed by the Phillies in 2020 and was developing in the Clearwater Threshers affiliate. A month after learning of his illness, the player returned to his team to support them from the dugout for a few games.

Philadelphia says farewell to Phelan

Phelan’s team announced the news of his passing on October 13 with a very emotional statement: “The Phillies family is extremely saddened by the tragic passing of Corey Phelan. Corey’s positive presence and selflessness influenced everyone around him.”

“While he was incredibly passionate about the game of baseball, his love for his family and strong faith superseded all else. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, as well as to his teammates and staff who stood by his side, providing emotional support throughout his courageous battle with cancer,” they concluded.

Also, the team’s director of minor leagues, Preston Mattingly, sent his condolences and spoke of Phelan.

“Corey was and always will be a very special person. His smile lit up any room and anyone who interacted with him loved having known him. His memory will live on forever, especially in the Phillies family,” said Mattingly
