The Philadelphia Phillies survived the Houston Astros and pitches Justin Verlander in Game 1 of the 2022 MLB World Series on Friday at Minute Maid Park.

Philadelphia came back from a 5-0 deficit and defeated the favorites with a solo home run by catcher JT Realmuto.

Astros starter Verlander started off great, keeping the board clear after his first 10 opponents at bat, while Kyle Tucker hit home runs in consecutive innings to give Houston the five-run lead after three innings.

The Phillies tied the score before the sixth frame and Realmuto secured the victory in the top of the 10th inning.

Realmuto surprised the crowd with a line drive home run against Luis Garcia that barely cleared the right field fence. This marks the first World Series game victory for the Phillies since 2009.

Poor performance by the starters

Verlander gave up six hits, five runs and two walks in five full innings, striking out five.

Phillies starter Aaron Nola, meanwhile, was on the mound for four innings and allowed six hits, five runs, two walks and five strikeouts.

Realmuto went 4-2 with a home run, three hits and a run scored. For the Astros, Tucker went 5-3 with two homers, four RBIs and two runs scored.

Zach Wheeler is scheduled to start for the Phillies on Saturday in Houston.
