On the day that free agency opened in the NBA the two notes that have drawn the most attention do not involve free agents, first Kevin Durant has demanded that the Brooklyn Nets trade them, and later it has been reported that two-time regular season MVP, Denver Nuggets Serbian center Nikola Jokic, has reached an agreement to sign the most onerous contract in the history of professional basketball.

Last option year for Jokic worth $60 million

According to information released by Shams Charania of The Athletic, Jokic has agreed to a five-year, $264 million maximum contract extension with the Nuggets, and the final year of the deal will be a player option worth a whopping $60 million.

Jokic has had more than spectacular production for Denver in the last couple of seasons, in which he has been recognized as the regular season’s Most Valuable Player, plus he is only 27 years old so it can be argued that his best years are yet to come and the Nuggets are hopeful that with the Serbian as their leader they can eventually hoist their first NBA championship.

NBA MVP in the last two seasons

In the 2021-2022 season, Jokic averaged 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game, however, that stellar production only helped the Nuggets to a sixth-place finish in the Western Conference with a 48-34 record.

In the first round of the playoffs, Denver faced the Golden State Warriors, the eventual champions eliminated them with a 4-1 series lead where they were largely dominated.

In his seven seasons in the NBA, Jokic has accumulated four All-Star Game selections (all in a row).
