The rock world is in mourning. Christine Mcvie, the British singer, keyboardist and songwriter who became an essential part of Fleetwood Mac, has died at the age of 79. Her death was made known in an official statement from the band on their social networks.

“There are no words to describe our sadness at the passing of Christine McVie. She was truly unique, special and talented beyond measure. She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life.

“We were very lucky to have a life with her. Individually and collectively, we deeply cherish Christine and are grateful for the incredible memories we have. We will miss her dearly,” the statement said.

She was an essential part of the band’s success

“She was in the company of her family. We kindly ask that the family’s privacy be respected at this extremely painful time, and would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was universally loved. RIP Christine McVie,” wrote Christine’s family, who did not release further details about what illness she suffered from.

Christine Perfect joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970 and was part of one of the greatest rock bands of the British scene, being the composer of several of the group’s greatest hits, such as “Don’t Stop”, “You Make Loving Fun”, “Hold Me”, “Little Lies” and “Over My Head”. She adopted the last name of her husband at the time, John McVie, one of the band’s founders.

By 1975, with the arrival of Americans Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham to the band, Fleetwood Mac became one of the most important groups in the world. By 1977, with their album Rumours, they achieved international success and won the Grammy for Record of the Year.

A career like few others in rock history

By 1987, the band released Tango in the Night, the last with the classic Fleetwood Mac lineup, and included hits such as “Everywhere” and “Little Lies,” which McVie co-wrote with her new husband, Eddy Quintela. By 1995, Christine left the band.

She lived quietly for the next 16 years in England until 2014 when she returned with the group. She released with Buckingham the album ‘Lindsey Buckingham Christine McVie’, in 2017, and her last live performance was on February 25, 2020 at the London Palladium for a tribute show to Peter Green.

One of the great legends in the rock scene has departed, leaving a legacy that has been recognized by fans, musicians and led to her induction into the Rock Hall of Fame.
