Former world kickboxing champion Maksym Kagal has been killed in battle while defending Ukraine from the ongoing Russian invasion in the city of Mariupol.

The 30-year-old was a member of the Azov unit, and his combat sports coach Oleg Skyrta confirmed his death on Facebook.

“Unfortunately, the war takes the best,” Skyrta said.

“Rest in peace, brother, rest in peace, we will take revenge for you.”

What is the controversial Azov unit?

The Azov unit is a paramilitary organisation created in 2014, and it was incorporated into the National Guard that year.

It is a paramilitary group, with many members who have xenophobic, homophobic and neo-Nazi views.

The unit is known in Spain due to its relation with Roman Zozulya, who played for Real Betis, Albacete and Fuenlabrada. Zozulya‘s sympathy for such groups saw him released from Rayo Vallecano without making his debut.
