The death of Queen Elizabeth II sent shockwaves around the world and the United Kingdom is currently bidding a final farewell to the Queen, who died on September 8 at the age of 96, but not all fans are respecting the tributes.

Sporting activities in Britain were suspended as a mark of respect and competitions such as the Premier League and the Scottish Premiership postponed their matches last weekend, with minutes of silence or applause held this weekend.

However, the match between Rangers and Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership saw one of the episodes that has marked the return of football, as the visiting fans boycotted the emotional minute’s silence in memory of the monarch by chanting “Lizzie’s in a box, Lizzie’s in a box, Lizzie’s in a box”.

Rangers and Dundee fans sing ‘Lizzy’s in a box’ and ‘If you hate the Royal Family clap your hands’

Dundee United fans echoed the chant created by fans of Shamrock Rovers of Ireland for the Europa League and made themselves heard during the minute’s silence at the Ibrox Stadium, the home of Rangers, the Scottish club most historically rooted to the British crown.

It was Dundee United‘s own official account that issued an official statement condemning the attitude of their fans.

Dundee United are aware of the actions of a small section of the crowd who chose to not respect the minute’s silence before this afternoon’s match at Ibrox,” a statement said.

“As a club, ahead of the game we reached out to advise our supporters of the pre-match arrangements with the expectation that the minute silence would be observed.”

Across Glasgow on Sunday, Celtic fans made their feelings about the Royal Family clear as they faced Saint Mirren at St Mirren Park.

During a minute’s applause in respect of the Queen, Celtic fans chanted and unfurled a banner which read that “If you hate the Royal Family clap your hands”.

Despite making their protests clear with vocal chants, neither Dundee United nor Celtic fans went home happy as Rangers beat Dundee United 2-1 at Ibrox before Celtic fell to a 2-0 defeat to St Mirren.
