In order to understand the difficult decision Tua Tagovailoa faces, first we need to assess how much his life would be affected if he retires from the NFL. During 2021, the 24.year old signed a 6-year contract for a staggering $224 million.

This rounds up his annual salary to $37.5 million per year. If he makes the decision to retire, he would be effectively giving up on the next five years of that contract. The recent injury he siffered during an NFL game last weekend was yet another wake up call for the entire NFL. Cases of former players dying at an early age are well documented.

The studies conducted on these late players’ brain tissue are helping doctors understand CTE a lot better every year. But this will hardly make the league’s owners reconsider putting their players in mortal danger. It’s the players themselves who need to make the decision to avoid death or even more horrible fates if they continue playing.

Giving up on hundreds of millions of dollars that will set their entire families for life is a nearly impossible decision. Many of these players have been getting knocked in the head since they were in peewee league, their damage is already irreparable. But Tua Tagovailoa’s case is very specific, he is QB1 for the Miami Dolphins.

Tua Tagovailoa risks being part of the biggest scandal in NFL history

Unfortunately, not listening to Dr. Bennet Omalu’s advice and staying active in the NFL can lead to an inevitable doomsday scenario for the NFL. Many players have died from consequences related to CTE. There have also been suicides that made the entire qorld question the NFL’s integrity on the matter. Given that they still seem to ignore this clear issue, what lies at the end of the tunnel is the biggest scandal in NFL history.

No player has ever died from a traumatic brain injury inside the field during an official game. As time goes by, this scenario seems more and more likely due to the NFL‘s stubbornness to ignore this catastrophic problem. So yes, Tua Tagovailoa should definitely retire if he wants to avoid a major scandal. Imagine what would happen if he dies on the field. The NFL would be suspended for indefinite time.
