Hilaree Nelson was found dead on Manaslu (8,163 metres). The ski mountaineer had been missing since Monday when she was affected by the avalanche that occurred on the eighth highest peak on the planet.

The rescue work got underway and, on Wednesday, one of the helicopters discovered the lifeless body of the American on a slope of the Manaslu mountain, some 6,000 metres above sea level, according to Jeevan Ghimire, director of the Shangrila-Nepal company, in charge of this expedition on Manaslu, in statements to Efe.

The rescue team recovered Nelson‘s body and transferred it to the base camp. Her remains will be flown to Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Hilaree Nelson, captain of The North Face international team, was on Manaslu with her partner Jim Morrison.

Nelson’s final words

“I haven’t felt as confident on Manaslu as I have on past adventures. These last few weeks have tested my resilience in new ways. I am challenged to find peace and inspiration on the mountain when it has been constantly shrouded in fog,” Nelson wrote on her Instagram five days ago.

As a member of The North Face international team and its captain when she took over from Conrad Anker, she had met the Pou brothers on numerous occasions.

They last met at The North Face athletes’ meeting in Puerto Rico. There Eneko and Iker surfed with Hilaree Nelson and Jim Morrison.

Tributes for Hilaree Nelson

“It’s a huge loss for us. We’ve always had a great relationship with her and Jim. She was a world reference in mountaineering and ski mountaineering, for boys and girls, even more so for girls because she was at a time when there were few women who could do that role. She has motivated thousands of women mountaineers all over the world,” Eneko Pou told MARCA.

Nelson, a 49-year-old mother of two, was an experienced climber who combined mountaineering and ski mountaineering.

She was the first woman to link the summit of Everest and Lhotse (8,516 m) in 24 hours. She succeeded on May 25, 2012.

In the autumn of 2018, she returned to Lhotse to make the first ski descent of this eight-thousand-metre peak.
