As soon as Canadian sniper ‘Wali‘ arrived in Ukraine to fight off the Russians, the invaders knew they needed to flex that propaganda arm in order to get fear out of their soldiers. A soldier as accomplished as him can make a huge difference against Russia, especially against less experienced soldiers who are not willing to go to war. There was a report about ‘Wali’ not even lasting a single day of combat but this rumor was completely debunked on Tuesday by the man himself. Global News journalist Ashleigh Stewart from Canada managed to find the Canadian war hero and got an interview from him that decribes everything he has experienced since he arrived in the country to fight Russians. As it turns out, ‘Wali’ didn’t perish, he just went dark for security reasons.

This is what ‘Wali’ said about the reumors of his death: “I was the last person to learn the news that I was dead. I think it’s just trolling. But I think it’s strange because after a while the enemy will lose credibility with this propaganda. I don’t understand why they push such lies. It’s pretty obvious because after a few days I’m popping out and telling everyone I’m alive. This war is like playing chess without knowing what the other pawns are. You know a bit but not enough. We got engaged with the Russians in very close distance, like 50 metres, and at that point they knew we were there. I was in a house where they shot the room right beside me with shells from a tank, I was about three metres away. We were lucky. Now I know how it feels to be engaged by a tank. I’m just a normal soldier. I’m a good soldier, no doubt about it. But I’m a good soldier among other good soldiers. Maybe the next time [the Russians] say that I’m dead it might be true but no one will believe them.”

How has the war treated ‘Wali’?

What surprised ‘Wali’ the most is that contrary to popular belief, there are still many nice places to stay in the country of Ukraine. Although war zones are completely devastated with no services at all, there are still many suburbs with everything to enjoy. He stayed at a nice condo in Kyiv for a few nights and even darnk great coffee from an espresso machine. Another aspect of the way that surprises ‘Wali’ is how unprepared the Russians are compared to NATO forces. He has noticed the difference in gear from the European forces compared to Russia, who is actually a very poor country with outdated weapons that still work but are nowhere as sophisticated as his own sniper riffle.
