Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said he’s not suprised to hear that FOX13 weatherman Joey Sulipeck used a racial slur to describe Draymond Green after defeating the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals.
Sulipeck, the chief meteorologist for WHBQ-TV, a Fox affiliate in Memphis, has worked at the station for nearly ten years and has won two Emmys for communication. After Grizzlies forward Kyle Anderson got ejected from Game 3 for losing his temper, Sulipeck expressed his outrage on Twitter.
“And chew on this,” Sulipeck tweeted. “Draymond runs his knuckle-dragging open mouth ALL GAME LONG, but mild-mannered Kyle Anderson disputes one call and gets ejected? Next level jackassery.”
After going viral for his racist remark, Sulipeck not only deleted the tweet but also vanished from social media entirely. Sulipeck’s Twitter and Instagram pages no longer exist, and he will likely get disciplined over his bigotry.
What does knuckle dragger mean?
The term “knuckle dragger” has long been used by bigots to describe an angry Black man. It is meant to compare them to a large and enraged ape such as a gorilla.
“Does it surprise me that a weatherman would tweet a slur at Draymond? In 2022? Not in the slightest bit,” Coach Kerr said when asked if he was suprised by the racist tweet. “This is America. This is how we operate.”
Green also reacted to the tweet when NBA reporter Jason Dumas shared the story on his Instagram. Accompanied with some laughing emojis, Green responded by telling Sulipeck not to apologize and to stand on what he said.
