The financial details behind Kylian Mbappe‘s mega new contract with Paris Saint-Germain have been revealed.

The Frenchman was expected to sign for Real Madrid in the summer, but his current club were able to produce a deal that he simply could not refuse.

He has talked in depth about the contract in an interview with The New York Times, which has been published this Tuesday.

According to the New York Times, Mbappe will be paid 250 million dollars (251.46m euros) for the three seasons he has signed on for, approximately 83m dollars per season.

Some of the headlines following his decision to stay with PSG claimed that the money from Qatar was too much to resist, and the New York Times states that Mbappe received around 125m dollars as his signing-on bonus, the largest payment made to an out-of-contract player in the history of the sport.

However, he has insisted in the interview that the huge sums of money on offer were not what guided him to make their final decision.

“Because wherever I go, I’m going to get money, I’m this type of player everywhere I go,” he said.

Mbappe also expressed surprise at how French president Emmanuel Macron spoke to him to try and keep him at PSG and, by extension, in the French top flight.

“I never imagined I was going to talk with the president about my future, about my future in my career, so it’s something crazy, really something crazy,” Mbappe said of the call he received from the president.

“He told me ‘I want you to stay, I don’t want you to leave now as you are so important for the country’.

“He said ‘You have time to leave, you can stay a little bit more’.

“Of course, when the president says that to you, that counts.”
